Clay, N.Y. — Sonic Drive-In opens its first location in the Syracuse area at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Here's what you need to know:Expect a crowd: Sonic openings tend to be big events. The opening of the Capital Region's first Sonic led to 200-car lines and four-hour wait times. Police will be on hand to direct traffic for the Central New York opening this weekend, franchisee Fran DeSimone said. "I would just say expect it to be extremely busy and be patient and wait," he said. "It's going to be busy. That's really the bottom line."
The menu: It's classic fast food. Hot dogs, chili dogs, burgers and fries. The chain is also known for offering tots as a side dish. The list of shakes is long: hot fudge, peanut butter, chocolate cream pie and pineapple, to name a few. There are a host of limeade flavors as well.
It really is a drive-in: Park your car, check out the menu and press the big red button on the board to order. A roller-skating carhop delivers your food. The Syracuse-area Sonics will all also feature an indoor dining area with seating. And if it's snowing, don't expect the skates.
The charity: The location will have a donation box out during its friends-and-family day on Friday to collect money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. DeSimone will match the collected donations. The location will also donate 10 percent of its sales from Friday, Saturday and Sunday to Make-A-Wish. Ten percent of Tuesday's sales will go to local veterans' charities. And on Friday, veterans get a sneak peek and can eat for free from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The details: The regular hours will be 7 a.m. to midnight Sunday to Thursday and 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The location employs 125 people.
Central New York's first Sonic is located between South Bay Road and Route 11 in the town of Clay. It's next to the McDonald's on Route 11. The address is 3808 Brewerton Road.
